The North Penn High School (NPHS) Chamber Singers recently traveled to Kansas City, MO to perform at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference, held from February 27 to March 2.
The conference is the largest choral event in the nation, held once every two years and featuring performances from 61 choirs at the secondary, college and professional level. The NPHS Chamber Singers were one of only 11 high school groups in the country to perform and the only choir from Pennsylvania, including college and professional groups.
To be selected to perform at this prestigious conference, NPHS Music Department Chair and Chamber Singers Director Matt Klenk had to send in three years' worth of recordings along with a lengthy application. " It's a really tremendous accomplishment for these young men and women," said Klenk.
The NPHS Chamber Singers, a group made up of 46 students in grades 10, 11 and 12, performed a 25-minute concert at the conference. "The goal is to showcase our students in the best way possible," said Klenk.
The Chamber Singers centered their program around the piece "In Dulci Jubilo," which has become a tradition for the group to sing every year. The piece tells a story of dreaming about what it would be like to experience perfection, even just for a moment. All of the group' s repertoire in Kansas City connected to this theme.
"I'm so proud of these students for their work ethic and their commitment to excellence," Klenk explained. "And not only these students, but the alumni of Chamber Singers as well - we had to submit recordings from the past three years to be eligible for this conference. These students know that they have a chance to do something special each time we get together to rehearse, and I'm so excited that they get to show what they can do on such a large stage. It's an honor to be the director of this program."
